A New Regime in Philadelphia

2015 ended the same way 2016 is starting for the Eagles, out with Chip Kelly and the players he brought in.

In a matter of hours on Monday, the Eagles unloaded nearly $20 million a year in contracts by trading away Byron Maxwell, Kiko Alonso, and Demarco Murray. The cap space allows them to be aggressive in free agency, and resign key players like Fletcher Cox.

It’s a new regime in Philadelphia and new head Coach Doug Pederson is letting his team and fans know he wants this franchise molded in his vision. After trading the aforementioned players, the Eagles swapped first round picks with Miami to move up to eight overall, and landed the first pick in the second round from Tennessee. What they do with these picks are crucial, but Pederson learned under one of the best, Andy Reid.

With the 2016 NFL Draft approaching, the Eagles now have two picks in the first 33 selections. A DE like Joey Bosa or Deforest Buckner would be a nice asset along side Fletcher Cox.

Cap space is the key . The secondary for Philadelphia is thin with Maxwell gone and Nolan Carroll hitting the Free Agent market. The bright side to this for the Eagles is the fact that premier CBs like Janoris Jenkins and Sean Smith are available. A secondary with the likes of Jenkins, Eric Rowe, and Malcolm Jenkins will keep offensive coordinators up all night.

Kiko Alsonso was brought in last year from Buffalo, but his tenure with Philly was cut short due to injuries. With now second year pro Jordan Hicks manning this corps, the Eagles can add the likes of Bruce Irvin or Derrick Johnson, the former Kansas City Chief where Pederson was the offensive coordinator.

Another former Chief that will be available in Free a Agency is RB Charcandrick West. The two year veteran racked up over 600 yards and four TDs after Jamaal Charles went down with an injury in week 5. Unite West with a rejuvenated Ryan Matthews and a sprinkle of Darren Sproles, and the Eagles will once be able to keep opposing defenses in their heels.

The Eagles have done two things this year to improve. They cut ties with players from an old regime, and are building for a new one. This teams talent was better than their record in 2015, and Doug Pederson and company are looking to load up and take 2016 by storm.
