I hate greatness, and you do too. It’s a very strange yet common concept in sports today, the more you win, the more likely people hate you. As my favorite internet troll’s favorite rapper once said: “they’ll always be haters, hater n***as marry hater *****es and have hater kids.” Recently I’ve started to wonder why we hate greatness, why not just bask in the moment and let these guys have their time in the spotlight?
Often in our everyday life, it’s easy to discern greatness from just good, so why is it so hard to do that in sports? When we engage in these “barber shop” debates, we fail to realize that no one time is ever comparable to another, simply put “change is inevitable Mr. Anderson.” Time changes…the GAME changes. Athletes have evolved just as society has evolved, yet we still find ourselves trapped in never-ending cross era comparisons and arguments. How can we compare men from different times, under different circumstances and then measure them next to another?

Why is it LeBron’s fault his peers are not athletically superior enough to challenge him? Shouldn’t that solidify his greatness, that he’s dominating his peers to the point you have to go back decades to find men measurable enough to of challenging him? Kobe used to be in that position, so did Jordan, and I’m pretty sure Magic and Bird went through it and so on and on. But today people just seem intent to tear down athletes achievements, to find flaws in the greatness so that they can make gods bleed.

Comparing any of today’s athletes to men of old is dumb. The games have changed; the rules have changed….and honestly these arguments take away from the athletes accomplishments. Ali was no Joe Louis in some people’s eyes, Jordan was no Magic, Messi is no Maradona, Crosby is no Lemieux , we can go on and on but we don’t tear down the 90s for the 80s stars or the 70s for the 60s stars…… and it’s not just Lebron, let’s stop doing that to the 21st century athlete. These men have worked hard to get to this level it’s time we as fans let go of the nostalgia of our childhoods and childhood heroes, and enjoy greatness.
